Every Brick, Every Story: SFAAL Trust Preserving the African American Built-Environment Legacy In San Francisco.

San Francisco African American Legacy Trust

The San Francisco African American Legacy Trust acknowledges that our mission addresses built-environments and operates on land that is located on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula.

At the San Francisco African American Legacy Trust (SFAAL Trust), our mission is to meticulously document, map, and manage the historically significant built spaces that have played a pivotal role in the African American narrative within the City and County of San Francisco. We are committed to preserving the rich heritage of notable African Americans and the broader African American community by safeguarding the places they have used, built, occupied, or utilized.SFAAL Trust stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, embracing the responsibility of safeguarding our city's African American legacy. Through comprehensive documentation and mapping efforts, we strive to ensure that the stories embedded in these spaces are not only remembered but also celebrated for generations to come. Our initiatives extend beyond documentation to encompass preservation, conservation, and the acquisition of built spaces that hold historical significance. Long-term objectives

SFAAL Trust understands that historically inequitable opportunities, urban renewal, and deliberate redlining policies directly impeded a community's ability to maintain an economic support system within its own community, while economic development is directly connected to entrepreneurship opportunities undersigned by affordable commercial spaces.

One of the objectives of the SFAAL Trust is to provide incubator spaces for under-served entrepreneurs in economically impacted communities.

Selected emerging, established, and historic legacy businesses will have the opportunity to house their businesses in an SFAAL Trust-managed commercial space for free for six (6) months while only paying for utilities and their own operating expenses.

After six months, the business will have the opportunity to continue leasing at below market rate on a year-by-year lease option.
